The Victims of Crime Fund
Many innocent adults and children have their lives drastically affected or seriously disrupted as victims of violence and abuse. Compensation has been available through a State Fund to victims of crime since 1969.
Legal costs are paid by the Crown Solicitor's Office and never by the victim of crime.
Payments of compensation from the Fund are designed to provide recognition for:
- physical injuries
- psychological injuries
- loss of wages
- medical expenses (not covered by Medicare or private insurance)
In cases involving sexual abuse against children, compensation can be paid for the psychological pain and suffering and the impact of the abuse on the capacity to study or seek employment
In cases involving homicide, special payments are available to family members of the deceased including recognition for:
- funeral expenses
- grief
- psychological injuries
